Wil SidemanShow card

Wil Sideman’s exhibition contains works derived from objects in his family history, which he used to research and explore concepts of family and self-identity. Working from site visits, memories, and family stories,  he has created individual sculptures using glass as the primary material.  Based On A True Story is an exhibition of work that pays tribute to the makers that came before Wil in his family and furthers his understanding of the narrative objects he has admired throughout his life.

We are excited to announce that for the month of August, we will be opening our doors to fellow artists for our first YARDS RESIDENCY!

During this time, THE YARDS will be divided into 4 spaces (about 200 sq. ft each).  4 Artists will be selected for each 2 week time slot.  During the 2 week period, there will be an opportunity for you to present your past work with your fellow residents, THE YARDS team, and the Rochester community.  We will also host open studios during Saturday Market hours.

THE YARDS was founded by artists Sarah C. Rutherford and Lea Rizzo.  While the focus of the YARDS has remained in the spirit of collaboration, it has thus far been focused around exhibits and events.  The two artists are excited to bring the focus for the month of August back to the creation.  Please note, these studio spaces will still be offered in a collaborative atmosphere, as there are no dividing walls between artists.  While collaboration between resident artists is by no means mandatory, we hope the creatively rich and diverse atmosphere will spark new ideas and ventures.

Please let us know if you have any questions and we look forward to your applications!

Aquatexture, presented by The Quadratic Trio and One Dance Co.

aqua4x6_3_29_1_

The Yards is excited to host the Quadratic Trio and one dance co.’s performance of “Aquatexture” this upcoming weekend. “Aquatexture” is an exciting music and dance collaboration, inspired by the sounds and sensation of water and wonder, meant to make the viewer feel as though they are submerged beneath the waves.

The Quadratic Trio’s musical composition uses a quadraphonic sound system to create sounds reminiscent of the ocean. Quadraphonic sound uses four channels to output sound; right front, left front, right rear, and left rear. The goal of a quadraphonic sound system is to reproduce sounds in both the front and back of the listener, which simulates 360-degree sound.

One dance co. has created an accompanying dance performance of submarine movement. Known for their ever-evolving, visionary, evocative dance pieces, every new creation of one dance co. is a unique, multi-sensory experience not to be missed.

Performance Dates:
Friday, March 29th @ 8:30
Saturday March 30th @ 4:00

a glimpse of Boys vs. Girls

It’s hard to believe that the Boys vs. Girls show is over already- From cardboard it came, and to cardboard it shall return.  The collaborative process- both within our team of awesome ladies, and with our male counterparts over at 1975- was a wonderful, fun, magical success. Thank you to all who participated, visited, and supported us along the way! Check out the photos below for a glimpse into the show.

We were also fortunate to have our half of the show put into words by the lovely and talented Becka Rafferty. We think what she came up with does the best job of summing up the little world that we created:

We are looking back at Before.
Before the mad, blinding rush of this life took hold
Before you insisted to us that you were something separate, boys
When there was just a flock of fledgling we
and unfettered possibilities
Swimming nameless and waiting to be formed by our tiny, certain hands.
Before distractions–
we instinctually budded toward the shining adventure of mystery
We didn’t dread or resent not knowing
because no provided answers means you’re in charge.
And we knew we are capable creators.
Before what could be settled firmly into what it seemingly must be.
We nourished ourselves with our minds
We’d shout and shapeshift,
race through realms invisible to a single other soul
Maybe make a pinprick viewfinder for another soul
So alien imaginations could seep in and dance with our own.
This is a loving glance over our full grown shoulders.
We are looking back,
seeking out where ourselves went hiding
And bringing discarded freedom into the light.

Boys vs. Girls

Boys vs. Girls

Hosted by 1975 and The Yards
Opening night – Saturday February 9th from 6-10pm

(Both galleries will be open at the same time)

Show runs in each gallery from February 9th until March 2nd
(Hours vary based on gallery’s schedule)

1975 will host the Guys, and The Yards will host the Girls.
Featuring over a dozen local artists in each gallery, the crews will battle it out using cardboard as the medium.

Harkening back to our youth, we thought of the endless possibilities a simple cardboard box held and challenged the artists to let their imaginations run wild.

ONE DANCE CO. will perform at both galleries opening night:
7pm – The girls invade the boys at 1975
9pm – The boys strike back and invade the girls at The Yards

Come join us at both galleries and judge who the winner is!
